At Cultivate Memphis Inc., our mission is to grow a stronger, more connected Memphis by empowering individuals with the tools, knowledge, and support they need to thrive. Founded by author E.W. Martin, whose book True Friendship Within the Youth of America inspires our commitment to community growth, we work every day to cultivate opportunity for all.
We serve Memphis through programs that nurture both personal and community development—including gardening education, trade-skill training, intellectual property awareness, real estate ownership education, youth development, and senior enrichment programs. We’re dedicated to meeting real needs by offering job assistance, clothing giveaways, homeless outreach, summer camps for children, and continued skill-building workshops.
From feeding the hungry to teaching hands-on skills that build long-term independence, Cultivate Memphis Inc. creates pathways for every member of our community to grow, lead, and succeed.
We believe that when we cultivate people, we cultivate a better Memphis—one harvest, one lesson, one life at a time.
Violence in Memphis often begins with broken friendships, conflict among peers, and young people lacking positive guidance. Many youth—ages 9 to 19—leave home with individuals they believe are friends, and some never make it back home. Cultivate Memphis steps in to change that reality.
We talk with community members, especially young people, about:
• What makes a real friend?
We ask youth and adults to identify positive character traits a true friend should have. Their voices matter, and we help spread those messages across the city to encourage healthy friendships and reduce conflict.
• What does it take to make it out of a tough neighborhood?
We open the door for honest conversations about opportunity, resilience, and change.
• What can we do to make our neighborhoods better?
Every voice counts. Community input guides our programs and outreach.
• What changes do YOU want to see in Memphis?
This final question helps us shape a vision for a safer, stronger city—together.
